Digital Video Stills from Foraged//Found Folio

In 2020-21 I spent the better part of a year researching my paternal lineage. It began with five boxes of albums, films and slides; organized, but mostly unlabeled. With help by the way of numerous calls to my family, as well as hundreds of hours spent reading through thousands of records I was able to piece together my Jewish family tree that I knew so little about.

Like foraging for mushrooms (a newfound hobby and passion I’ve gathered while living in Western New York), members of my family appeared out of nowhere.
My small family of less than a dozen extended out to a little over four hundred.

What I have learned while foraging is that incredible amounts of time, patience, and a keen eye are needed to find the beautiful, fruiting bodies all around us. I find parallels in the deep search for both fungus and for ancestors and make this work as an homage to my research and to the wonder and spontaneous surprises still left on this earth (if you know how to look).
